Calliope

Calliope is a troupe of six women singers who have become known in the D.C. metropolitan area for their spirited and soulful performances of contemporary and traditional Jewish music. Calliope’s repertoire includes songs both secular and religious, a cappella and acoustic, in Hebrew, English and Yiddish.

Calliope's debut CD, All in Good Time, was released in September 2004. The CD features contemporary interpretations of prayers and songs from the liturgy and folk songs from around the world. Most songs on the CD were recorded with instrumental accompaniment, while a few are performed a cappella.

As the title of this CD suggests, the 12 selections share a common theme of time – some celebrate Jewish traditions that have endured through generations; some express hope for the future. Among the selections is Calliope’s medley of songs for Havdalah, which marks the close of Shabbat and the beginning of the new week. This four-part medley, at times soulful and at times rousing, combines traditional and contemporary Havdalah melodies. Another selection, the South African freedom song Woyaya, reminds us that, like the Jewish exodus from Egypt, others, too, have endured lengthy and arduous journeys in their search for freedom and a better life. All 12 songs on the CD have a contemporary folk feel and showcase the rich vocal harmonies that are a Calliope hallmark.

The members of Calliope are Rene Boni (vocals, guitar), Sheila Smallberg Cohen (vocals, percussion), Debbie Fink (vocals, violin), Debbie Glick (vocals, percussion), Deborah Neipris Hendler (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Sandy Lederman (vocals, keyboard, bass).

Calliope is available to perform at concerts, services and life-cycle events.
