Velvet & Steel: Thinkin’ Like Lincoln. This exciting assembly is in the nick of time for the nationwide celebration of the Lincoln Bicentennial (1809-2009). Seize this historic, monumental time as a teachable moment. Combine U.S. History/Social Studies with Character Education--all in one fell swoop. It’s worth every Lincoln Penny you’ll end up spending on it! Speaking of which, do you know about the historic controversy over the Lincoln Penny? Stay tuned.
Thanksgiving / Givingthanks: Celebrating an Attitude of Gratitude. Thanksgiving is coming ‘round the bend. Again, combine U.S. History/Social Studies with Character Education. (Did you know that Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday in the middle of the Civil War?) This program breezes through five centuries of history related to Thanksgiving, teaching/reinforcing the concept of “a century.” Top it off with music played live on a fiddle and the possibilities of a hoedown!
Friends! Building Friendship Value by Value. No matter how far along your school is on the path of Character Education, year-round needs abound (“bullying” and “cliques” are just a few key buzzwords). You know it, I know it, and our grandmothers sure knew it. We adults need to circle the wagon. We can drive these life-lessons and messages home in a creative, interactive, meaningfully fun manner. What are we waiting for? Let’s get movin’!
The Gift of Writing Project. Give your students the gift of writing, all tied up with a big green bow . . . and a yellow bow . . . and a red bow. Let them experience the writing process visually, aurally, kinesthetically, and cognitively. Next time they pick up a pencil to write, they’ll be grinning from ear to ear! We love to do workshops geared to specific grades, supplementing what is being done in class. April is National Poetry Month. A Poetry Workshop, tailored to your interests, awaits beyond Harmony Hearth’s gates . . .
Brain Power! Celebrating Learning Differences. Guess what? Individuals have different learning styles and, notwithstanding some controversy, multiple intelligences. Brain research is burgeoning and incredibly exciting. Let’s share some child-friendly neurosciences with your students while we celebrate learning differences! We guarantee students (and adults) will samba dance their way out of the assembly as they chant and say in sign language: “Go Brain Power! Viva a diferença!” [Portuguese for “celebrate differences!”].
