HARMONY  HEARTH

We want to share with you a cutting edge program that was created for the McLean School community by Debbie Fink of Harmony Hearth, LLC and presented to students in grades K-6 and separately to parents. This program is called "Brain Power: Celebrating Learning Differences". In collaboration with our community, Debbie utilized the messages and needs in our school to take the students on a journey through the brain, including a dance up the spinal cord and into the right and left hemispheres of the brain . . .. She discussed the various functions of each of the brain's hemispheres and connected these tasks to heroes in our history who have made great accomplishments to our society and the world in spite of learning and physical disabilities.

The students and parents engaged in an esteem building experience to create greater awareness, understanding, and acceptance of learning differences and how these can empower us to greatness.

From Beethoven to Whoopi Goldberg, Harry Belafonte, Rodin, Dr. Ben Carson, and Helen Keller
among others, Debbie told their stories as students celebrated their contributions by displaying
their art, music, and books.

She taught students and parents to sign the phrase "Go Brain Power: Viva La Differenca!"
which they chanted throughout the presentation. We are hoping to use
the messages from this program in the future to reinforce our educational culture of acceptance
and empowerment.

Debbie has done character education programs for many schools around the area and has some well established programs already in place, in addition to the one she just created. Her presentation style is engaging, entertaining, and developmentally appropriate for the younger age groups (we have only had the experience of seeing her program presented to K-6). She was a pleasure to collaborate with and her creativity became infectious. She is a truly dedicated educator and artist. If you would like more information or to talk to us further about this program, feel free to get in touch. . . .

Dear Ms. Fink,

Thanks so much for the presentation this morning.  Not only was it informative, but it was fun.  Why am I not surprised?

Before your performance, I met with a fourth grade class.  By coincidence, instead of doing the lesson I originally planned, I opted to read the book Thank You Mr. Faulkner.  . . . I obviously did not know that you would be talking about Ms. Polacco in your presentation.  What great timing.

Again, your presentations are always lively and mind stretching.  I will make sure to share this with the other counselors in our clusters.

Sincerely,
Genie Wetstein
